Use of The Verb To Be

It is used to mention an action or state of the subject at any time. I am Mexican

I was a doctor.

It is used in the company of other verbs to imply that the actions or states are taking place at the moment.

The verb to be in the present is mainly used to refer to something true in the present or to give basic information. The forms of the verb in the present are am, is, are. The verb to be in the past is used to talk about true information, facts or data that happened in the past.

Here are some examples of the use of the verb to be.

Describe something or someone.

If you want to describe a person, the verb to be will be very useful. Look at the following example:

Colin is an accountant. He is a man. He is canadian. His eyes are brown. He is intelligent and very friendly.

💡 Keep in mind that in English to talk about age you don't use the verb have, but the verb to be.

Example: (I am 34 years old.)

❌ Incorrect: I have 34 years old.

✅ Correct: I am 34 years old.

Mention a location.

You can talk about the geographic or spatial location of something or someone.

Examples:

Martin is at the university.

New Orleans is in the United States.

The keys are under the bed.
